Drumbaragh 0-06
Oldcastle 1-08
The beautiful BBQ provided by our hosts Moylagh was the only highlight from a Drums perspective, as an undercooked Drumbaragh were flipped over by Oldcastle in Round 2 of the Intermediate Championship.
The opening half was not for the purist, Oldcastle the more dominant in possession but struggled to convert their chances. Davy Cahill’s Drums defended well throughout this contest, but the defensive performance meant our offensive unit were living off scraps (no BBQ pun intended).
As disciplined as Drumbaragh were in defence led by the impressive Luke Fagan, The Drums attack will rue some bad wides at pivotal times in the game, with the wind at their backs. Oldcastle outpointing 0-04 to 0-01 by the 20th minute. A late William Carry point (Drumbaragh’s only from play) kept his side on their opponent’s coat-tails at the break. A lot to improve on, but the sense from the Drum’s crowd was that Oldcastle were there to be got at.
HT – Drumbaragh 0-02 Oldcastle 0-05.
Drumbaragh needed to hit the ground running at the resumption, but it was Oldcastle that stretched their lead to four by the 33rd minute through the impressive Lee Healy. Oldcastle would point again through Ronan Maguire before Healy dealt Drumbaragh a hammer-blow hitting the back of Jake Balfe’s net with 43 minutes on the clock.
Captain Hughie Corcoran led by example and reeled off three points on the bounce for Drumbaragh, the Oldcastle foul-count clocking up as they opted to defend from deep protecting a healthy cushion. As in the first-half, the men in green were not without their chances in front of goal, but Oldcastle defended resolutely to keep Conor McHugh’s clean-sheet in tact.
As the final whistle sounded, it was delight for The Blues and an opportunity missed for Drumbaragh, who will have to find their shooting boots in time for a crunch clash against St.Pats in two weeks’ time.
