Drums Lack Killer Touch In Derby
It was back to back defeats in the league for Drumbaragh. The Drums have been finding it hard to get their best 15 on the field this campaign through injury and county commitments. So once again Fiachra Sweeney had to reshuffle his pack.
Just like the prevoius round, The Drums gave themselves far too much to do in the opening exchanges. An almost full-strength Kilmainham were 0-06 to 0-00 to the good after 15 minutes, the Drumbaragh’s rearguard finding it hard to pin down Mickey Newman, the resultant frees converted, as expected, by the Killers’ main man.
As the half went on Drumbaragh began to work the ball better, finding spaces and gaps, both Liam Ward and the returning Willie Carry pointing twice close to half-time to leave it 0-06 to 0-04.
The second-half began as the first did, Kilmainham the sharper in the forward department. Reeling off 5 scores in a row to add further daylight, former county man Newman again pointing 4 frees to make it 0-11 to 0-04.
Drumbaragh stayed in the fight thanks to some fierce defending by Eamonn McGee and Jake Balfe with points from Ward and Conor Lynch keeping us in the hunt. The visitors will rue a number of good scoring opportunities as Kilmainham retreated into a blanket defence, before Lynch eventually found the net to bring it to a 3 point game, giving the Kilmainham crowd some jitters in the process.
However the Drums revival was too little, too late and Kilmainham sealed the win with a point in added time to claim two valuable league points.
Thanks to Kilmainham for a sporting game and to our loyal supporters who turned up in fantastic numbers. The Drums will look to regroup this week coming and get things back on track in the next round.
